US Naturalization
To apply for naturalization, the department of homeland security has several requirements:
o Understanding of the English language, ability to read, write and speak simple words and
phrases common in the English language.
o Knowledge and understanding of history and form of government of the United States.
o There are important exemptions for testing based on age:
o If you are over 50 years old and has lived in the United States as a permanent resident for at
least 20 years need not take the English test but if you take the history and government test
in Spanish.
o If you are over 55 years old and has lived in the United States as a permanent resident for at
least 15 years need not take the English test but if you take the history and government test
in Spanish.
o All applicants for naturalization must be willing to support and defend the United States and
the constitution.

What is the process of becoming a U.S. citizen?
To apply for citizenship, you must apply with a N-400 form and submit it to the INS along with you payment (money
order). Thereafter, you will be required to go for an appointment to obtain your fingerprints which will be submitted
to the FBI for an extensive background check. Once the finger prints are cleared, you will called to successfully
complete an interview with an INS officer at one of their locations. During this interview, you will ask questions about
US History, and you will also be asked to write a sentence in English. Finally, you will be sent an invitation to
participate in the Oath Ceremony of the United States of America.
When you receive your Certificate of Naturalization, you are a citizen and can immediately register to vote, begin to
petition any of your family members outside of the United States and receive the benefits enjoyed by American
citizens
